Indonesian Autumn Adder or Artheris hispida is a venomous viper species endemic to Indonesia. At first, scientist recorded that this snake is endemic to Central Africa before they find it in Indonesia. Indonesian Autum Adder is known for their extremely keeled dorsal scales that give it an almost bristly appearance. Unfortunately this animal subspecies are currently no recognized which means that Indonesian Autumn Adder is not their official name.
They basically Capable of climbing reeds and stalks, this species is often found basking on top of flowers and terminal leaves. Most of them is nocturnal.
According to Wikipedia, The males of this species could grow to maximum total length of 73 cm (29 in): body 58 cm (23 in), tail 15 cm (5.9 in). Females grow to a maximum total length of 58 cm (23 in). The males are surprisingly long and slender compared to the females.
The head has a short snout, more so in males than in females. The eyes are large and surrounded by 9-16 circumorbital scales. The orbits (eyes) are separated by 7-9 scales. The nostril is like a slit and separated from the eye by two scales. The eye and the supralabials are separated by a single row of scales. The supralabials number 7-10, of which the fourth is enlarged. The body is covered with elongated, heavily keeled dorsal scales that give this species a “shaggy”, almost bristly appearance. The scales around the head and neck are the longest, decreasing posteriorly. Midbody, the dorsal scales are in 15-19 rows. There are 149-166 ventral scales and 35-64 subcaudals. The anal scale is single.
Indonesian Autum Feeder Feeds on mammals, frogs, lizards, and sometimes birds. In additional,sometimes they also hunts for mammalian prey on the ground.
The Females give birth to up to 12 young at a time. Newborns are about 15 cm (5.9 in) in total length.
Most of reptile lovers or fans considered this animal as the most beautiful snake in the world. Well, basically if you see the detail feature of this animal you would find that this species is different and unique compare to other species of snakes.
But for me personally, because I don’t like snake in general, I don’t think this snake is beautiful, unique maybe but definitely not beautiful. I can’t understand why peoples can find this animal is beautiful because they had scary looking.
In additional, even tough this Indonesian Autumn Adder is small, they have deadly poison and can kill any person in one single bite. What about that? I believe you will thinks twice calling this snake beautiful.
